Rationing during world War 2
"Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do Or Do Without" was a common saying during WW2 on the home front. This was a saying that referred to rationing. Rationing must have been very difficult, not being able to get everything that you want. You couldn't just go out and buy things that you wanted or needed, even if you had enough money. You couldn't unless you had enough tokens/stamps. Tokens and War Books were given to each member of an American family to limit the buying of important materials. Once you used up your ration tokens you couldn't buy any more of that material/food until the next months stamps/tokens came in. The things in there everyday life had to be given up because the U.S. joined the war and they needed the supplies used to make their supplies needed in the war. They also created the ration books because there was a concern that people would hoard the goods needed for the war and the prices of the materials needed and the prices would go up. Which they were afraid might create a national economic crisis if they didn't introduce rationing. You never knew when something you bought a lot would go on ration and when it would come off if it ever did. Like, cheese, canned milk and fish, fats and meats of when on ration in March 1943 and didn't come off until November 1945. Tires went on ration January 1942 and didn't come off until December 1945.
I chose the topic of rationing during World War II to find more out about what the people did/had to sacrifice, to help the war and to support the military. I wanted to learn what everyday people had to go without and learn how they dealt with not being able to buy everything that they wanted even if they had enough money. Things about the tokens/stamps are interesting to me. I wanted know what the tokens/stamps looked like and examples of how many stamps you had to have for each food/ material. People had to ration during the War in order for the soldiers to have what they need to win the war, and I wanted to know everything that they had to ration and why they had to ration that specific material or food. I learned so much with the research I did. Like, The first food and nonfood item to be rationed.
